No. 948 Herrera v. United States, Union of Journalists of Paraguay

international seminar in

des connections related: anti-militarism, feminism, women, conscientious objection and counter-hegemonic sexualities

and training in nonviolent direct action from a critical gender perspective

Which will take effect on Asuncion in the week of 10 to 16 May under the International Day of Conscientious Objection (15 May). This time the theme is Women and convener of conscientious objection.

why this topic?

Why women are active in almost every antiwar movement and conscientious objectors although compulsory military service for women only exists in two countries (Israel and Eritrea). But the military wants to recruit more women as "volunteers" - in the United States, Europe, Australia, South Africa, and in many Latin American countries. On the other hand access to the military for women is a major issue for most of the feminist movement (such as access for lesbians and gay men for most of the LGBT movement).

To antiwar - women and men, heterosexual and homosexual - this issue is more complex. The presence of women in the armed forces does not change the patriarchal nature of the army, or the machismo / masculinity of the soldiers. Many - if not most - of the female soldiers experience sexual harassment or rape during their military service, and discrimination is common.

Also, in the antiwar movement women are often not as visible as men. In most of the movements of conscientious objection are men - conscientious objectors - who are representatives of the movement, and "heroes" if they suffer repression and imprisonment. Even in Israel, where women are forced to serve military service - the objectors until recently women did not suffer the same treatment as objectors, and often the role of women objectors was to support and applaud the heroes objectors in the military prison.

As Cynthia Enloe has written in his foreword to the anthology of women objectors WRI: "An objector 'ordinary' is presumably male. I presume you, I presume. Therefore, there is no need for any of us to say 'male objector' to distinguish a male from an objector objector female. It is our own habit masculinization not only the soldiers but also those who refuse to be soldiers ...".
